Post-Meeting Field Trip to Sandia National Labs

2018 COMPRES Annual Meeting

August 08, 2018

Field Trip Date:  Wednesday, August 8, 2018
Field Trip cost: $75 includes lunch, transportation from Tamaya to Sandia National Laboratories and transportation from the labs to the Albuquerque airport, Tamaya or the Sheraton.
Deadline to register and submit visitor information form: June 4, 2018 at 5PM MDT

Field trip limited to 50 participants

Z: Z is the world's most powerful pulsed power machine. It uses high magnetic fields associated with high electrical currents to produce high temperatures, high pressures, and powerful X-rays for worldwide research in high energy density science. Z can provide >330 trillion watts of x-ray power in the photon energy band of ~0.1-1 keV.  This capability enables benchmark experiments of fundamental material properties in radiation-heated matter at conditions previously unattainable in the laboratory. These experiments address important astrophysical problems such as energy transport in the solar interior, the radiative properties of matter in close proximity to a black hole, and the age of the Galaxy as inferred using observed spectra from the oldest stars. Z can generate pressures in mantle minerals relevant to the Earth’s interior all the way up to an exosolar super-Earth interior, which helps us understand the interior structure of planets

Dynamic Integrated Compression Experimental (DICE) facility: The DICE facility is a material dynamic experimental test facility that has been operating since 2005. The facility houses a laboratory test launcher (gun) and a small pulse power machine (Veloce), and the new THOR pulse power machine. The facility incorporates many state of the art diagnostics such as VISAR (Velocity Interferometer for Any Reflector) and PDV (Photonic Doppler Velocimetry) as well as sample pre-heating and pre-cooling capabilities.

THOR: The Thor prototype is a cutting edge pulsed power driver optimized for material-physics experiments. Individual pulse power modules can be triggered individually to achieve precisely shaped current time histories at the material-physics load driven by the accelerator. Thor is designed to be a relatively inexpensive isentropic-compression-experiments (ICE) driver to conduct megabar-class experiments with a high degree of current-pulse-shape tailoring. The Thor facility is an ideal place to design and test new ideas and diagnostics for either Thor itself or before executing higher pressure shots on Z.
