The Department of Geological Sciences at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position for Raman study of methane hydrates in geological systems.

Postdoc Position for Raman Study on Methane Hydrate at the Department of Geological Sciences, The University of Texas at Austin

We seek a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to join our methane hydrate research project at the University of Texas at Austin. The post-doctoral scientist will pursue the micro-Raman spectroscopy study of methane hydrate at high pressure and low temperature conditions relevant to natural hydrate reservoir environments. Potential candidates should be familiar with two-dimensional micro-Raman mapping using Renishaw and Horiba systems. Programming skill or using a commercial program in processing large amount of 2D Raman spectra will be needed for the project. Candidates with backgrounds in laboratory experimental equipment operation (pressure and temperature controls) and sediment sample preparation as well as knowledge in sedimentology, mineral physics and thermodynamics, and/or pore fluid dynamics are encouraged to apply. The individual will work in the Mineral Physics Laboratory of the Department of Geological Sciences and Pressure Core Center of the Institute for Geophysics at UT Austin under Prof. Jung-Fu Lin (afu@jsg.utexas.edu) and Prof. Peter B. Flemings (pflemings@jsg.utexas.edu).

Qualified individuals should have a Ph.D. in Geosciences, Petroleum Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related field at the time of appointment. Salary is $50,000 per year and appointees are eligible for group health insurance. The initial appointment for the position is for one year. The position could be reviewed for the second year upon successful evaluation of the first-year job performance. Review of candidates will begin June 24, 2019; applications will be accepted until the position is filled. Send an application consisting of (1) letter of interest, (2) CV, and (3) names of three references willing to write letters of references. Please send applications electronically as email attachment to Prof. Jung-Fu Lin (afu@jsg.utexas.edu) and reference Methane Hydrates Raman with Postdoctoral in the subject line.
