Required Qualifications: (Evidenced by an attached resume)
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Geosciences, Chemistry, Physics or a related discipline by Spring 2022. Applicant must have demonstrated experience, through publication including thesis, with working with in situ apparatus, with calibration of this apparatus and with an experimental program using in situ techniques.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
Work with powder and/or single crystal, x-ray and/or neutron diffraction either in the laboratory setting or at national synchrotron x-ray and/or neutron facilities. Demonstration through thesis and/or published work of familiarity with modern wide-angle diffraction techniques at non-ambient conditions.
 
Other than standard diffraction tools at national facilities the following would be preferred:
 
• Pair Distribution Function Analysis.
• Small angle scattering.
• Good communication skills as demonstrated in interview, seminar and published work.
• Experience in supervision and training of graduate/high school students and other outreach activities (especially with minorities).
• Ability to set-up, test and supervise operation of in situ equipment, collaborate and interface with collaborators and form strong relationships with key players at the national sources (NSLS-II, APS and SNS) to move existing projects forward.
• Day to day supervision and mentoring of graduate students.
• Experience in solid state synthesis techniques.
• Familiarity with chemical analysis techniques such as electron beam microprobe and/or energy dispersive x-ray analysis.
• Experience in programming in Python, C/C++, and/or Matlab.
• Experience in using CAD 3D design software e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, 123D Design or other similar software.
 
Brief Description of Duties:
Postdoctoral researcher to move ahead with new avenues as part of a wider effort in synthesis, and high-pressure work at SBU-BNL.

Duties to include:
 
• Individual research in discovery and testing of novel phases
• Preparation of manuscripts and beamline proposals with graduate students
• Supervision and training of graduate students in synthesis/in situ scattering
• Travel and aid in data collection at neutron and x-ray sources
• Set-up, testing and supervise operation of in situ sample environments, including high-pressure equipment
• Overall Project Supervision and Coordination
• Interaction with theory groups to select targets for synthesis.
• Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
 
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
