HIGP HIGH-PRESSURE RESEARCH LAB MANAGER (#0080782)
Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), part of School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) is looking to fill a regular non-tenure-track, full time, research support position, located on the UHM campus in Honolulu, HI. As Research Lab Manager, the incumbent of this position will play key role in the operation of unique multi-million dollar, multi-faculty PI facilities for state-of-the-art research in high-pressure Earth and materials science.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

• Provides support in preparing plans, schedules, and conduct of technical and research projects.
• Develops and improves analytical techniques and protocols, and conducts quality control for projects.
• Regularly exercises considerable depth of knowledge in the areas of X-ray physics, laser spectroscopy and high pressure research.
• Provides training and assistance to laboratory users with analytical and instrumental protocols.
• Coordinates repair of laboratory instrumentation and infrastructure.
• Supervises and technically reviews work of lower level professionals and/or student assistants.

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Professional Work Experience
Possession of a B.A. degree with 6 years of pertinent work experience, M.Sc. degree with 4 years of pertinent work experience, or Ph.D. degree with 2 years of pertinent work experience. Acceptable degree disciplines include geology, mineralogy, crystallography, materials science, mechanical, electrical or materials engineering, physics, chemistry, and other closely related fields. Work experience should be in research or engineering support, including usage, maintenance or customization of instrumentation used in high-pressure research, or development of experimental methods for crystallography, spectroscopy, or synchrotron radiation.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the specialty area.
• Ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing and verbally.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
• Ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.

SECONDARY/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Computer programming skills, experience with instrument development, design, customization and control, experience with mechanical and electrical design and knowledge of the associated software, experience with laboratory high-pressure hydraulic systems, experience with laser technology, hands-on experience with machine shop equipment operation.
