Required Qualifications:


Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry, Geochemistry, Materials Science, or a related field in hand by September 2020. Experience conducting relevant experiments as evidenced in publications or thesis.



Preferred Qualifications:


Familiarity with modern national facility based techniques as evidenced in publications or thesis. Experience in NMR spectroscopy. Experience in synchrotron and neutron characterization, including but not limited to X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function, small-angle scattering, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES/EXAFS), transmission x-ray microscopy, single crystal techniques and tomography. Experience in solid-state synthesis or melt synthesis. Experience in operating a floating-zone apparatus. Experience in designing, fabricating and/or carrying out experiments with in situ experiments at large user facilities or on other sophisticated instrumentation. Experience in programming in Python, C/C++, and/or Matlab. Experience in using CAD 3D design software, e.g. SolidWorks, AutoCAD, 123D Design or other similar software. Experience in using glovebox and working under a controlled atmosphere. Experience in metals, transport phenomena and/or 3D printing.



Brief Description of Duties:



  • The Postdoctoral Associate will assist the Principal Investigator in the department of Geosciences. The incumbent will conduct research and ensure that all experiments are appropriately conducted following the policies and procedures of Stony Brook University.


  • The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.


  • Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments in the field of materials synthesis and crystal growth, and reactions within the predetermined research scope and methodology. This includes: (i) identification of compositions and targets, based on empirical solid state chemistry concepts or theoretical guidance, (ii) development of synthesis and characterization protocols, (iii) coordination of the complete research process from planning to publication.


  • Collect and analyze data, including periodical/literature searches and utilizing specialized skills in related fields to analyze the collected data.


  • Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. Participate in EFRC meetings, discussion and provide reports and presentation on research progress according to EFRC guidelines. Assist in grant writing.


  • Lab maintenance, including equipment setup, maintenance and ordering of supplies as needed; participate in research group discussion, meetings and assist in supervising students in synthesis/in situ scattering.


  • Interaction with computational groups to select targets and attach provenance to correlate reaction variables to pathways.


  • Other duties as assigned.

The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.



Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
