Senior Lecturer in High-Pressure, High-Temperature Experimental Petrology

Description:

Job no: 502407

Work type: Full Time

Vacancy type: Internal Vacancy, External Vacancy

Categories: Academic - Teaching and Research

About the Department
The Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences aim to build a community of creative and critical thinkers that sets the geoscience agenda. Our program is unique in the diversity and inter-connectivity of the individual research strands that cross conventional sub-discipline boundaries.
Our analytical laboratories are world leading for nanoscale in situ analysis for spatially resolved geochemistry, advanced computing power to model planetary processes, experimental facilities capable of simulating earth and planetary processes, microscale analysis of the organic-mineral interface. We take a four-dimensional Earth systems approach that exploits geological settings, advances in instrumentation and modelling to understand processes from a fundamental, mechanistic perspective.

The Role
We seek an Experimental Planetary Scientist with a track record in applying high-pressure, high-temperature experimental approaches to understanding the structure and dynamics of the Earth and other planetary bodies.
The position is part of a University initiative to grow an interdisciplinary team focused on planetary sciences coordinated by the Macquarie University Planetary Research Centre which spans the Departments of Physics and Astronomy, Earth and Planetary Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Engineering.
This position in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, aims to build upon a recent investment of over $3M in infrastructure for high-pressure experimentation (piston cylinders, multi-anvils and laser heated diamond anvil cells), geochemical analysis and computational platforms.
The successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with faculty members across the Planetary Research Centre to add an experimental component to the existing strong theoretical, computational and geochemical programs, to contribute to the development of our high-pressure laboratories, as well as to lead a program of their own personal research.
