High-Pressure Experimental Geoscientist, Macquarie University, Sydney

We seek an outstanding high-pressure experimentalist to spearhead the development and exploitation of high-pressure experimental systems in the high-pressure laboratory at the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Macquarie University. The appointment will be on the academic scale as mixed service and research with no teaching requirement. It will be fixed term up to 4 years with possibility of transfer to a continuing position depending on performance. Application deadline is 21st April, 2019.

The successful candidate will be expected to pursue a program of experimental high-pressure research allied broadly with the theme of the Australian Laureate Fellowship project Deep Earth Cycles of Carbon, Water and Nitrogen and in collaboration with department staff. Service duties will include taking responsibility for the safe operation of all types of high-pressure equipment in the experimental laboratories; maintaining the laboratory in a high state of readiness for experimental use; advising in the choice of experimental consumables; scheduling, supervising and instruction of postgraduate students, post-doctoral research associates and visitors in the use of the facilities.

We are seeking an outstanding high-pressure experimentalist to spearhead the development and exploitation of high-pressure experimental systems in our laboratory on Macquarie’s campus. The ideal person has a PhD in a relevant subject and an extensive background in the use of piston-cylinder and multi-anvil apparatuses. We are seeking an individual whose research interests and experience complement the research programs of current Macquarie University scientists.

About Us

Our laboratory is currently expanding its high-pressure research program with the installation of new piston-cylinder, multi-anvil and laser heated diamond anvil systems, as well as high-pressure deformation systems at the Australian synchrotron and neutron facilities at ANSTO.
Macquarie University’s Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences incorporates world-class geochemical and numerical simulation facilities. Department members emphasize cross-links between geochemistry, geophysics and petrology in mantle and lithosphere studies. It hosts the ARC Centre of Excellence for Core to Crust Fluid Systems and the Macquarie Planetary Research Centre.

Salary Package: Appointment will be at Level A Step 6 ($91,991 to $98,588 p.a.) or Level B ($103,914 to $122,947 p.a.) subject to qualifications and experience, plus 17% employer's superannuation and annual leave loading.
